Mark Lazberger, CFA
Chief Executive Officer

Mark Lazberger is the Chief Executive Officer for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in Sydney.

In his role, Mark leads the global asset management business which is a wholly owned division of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The business operates under the name of Colonial First State Global Asset Management in Australia and as First State Investments internationally. The business is a global specialist investment manager operating in locations across the world including Australia, Asia, Europe and North America.

Mark has responsibility for more than A$219 billion1 in assets under management across equities, fixed income, alternatives and multi-asset solutions. He oversees the performance and strategic direction of all vehicles managed by the business.

Before joining CFSGAM in September 2008, Mark was President, International and Executive Vice President of State Street Global Advisors (SSgA). Before this, he was Head of International Businesses, President and CEO of State Street Japan and a Principal and Regional Managing Director of SSgA's businesses in Japan and Australia. He joined State Street in 1991.

Mark sits on the Board of Governors of the CFA Institute and is also a Director of the Sydney Theatre Company.

Liz Hastilow
Chief Legal Officer

Liz Hastilow is the Chief Legal Officer for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in Sydney.

In her role, Liz has direct oversight for our legal, risk and compliance (also described as Line 1 Risk Management) functions.

Before joining CFSGAM in November 2017, Liz was a Co-Practice Area Leader and Partner at global law firm K&L Gates. In that role Liz advised and co-lead a global team of in excess of 150 investment management partners and lawyers advising, investment management clients across the globe on matters such as new business establishment, investment management mergers and acquisitions and joint venture arrangements; investment fund structuring and distribution, regulatory and business transformation change projects, regulator engagement, financial services law compliance and management of regulatory investigations and breaches. Before joining K&L Gates, Liz spent 18 years at Henry Davis York.

Liz was named Best Lawyers ‘Lawyer of the Year' in Investment Management for 2015 and as ‘Lawyer of the Year' in Wealth Management for 2018. She was also recognised as a leading lawyer in Investment Funds by Chambers Asia Pacific from 2012 to 2017 (Band 1) and also in Financial Services and was recognised in Best Lawyers from 2013 to 2018 as an expert for Funds Management, Investment Funds, Investment Law, Regulatory Practice and Wealth Management Practice.

Mark Steinberg
Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer

Mark Steinberg is the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in Sydney.

Mark is a Chartered Accountant who has worked in Chief Financial Officer or equivalent roles for the past 15 years. Before joining CFSGAM in September 2017, Mark was Group Chief Financial Officer of Cover-More where he oversaw several acquisitions before Cover-More itself was acquired in April 2017. Included in his role as Chief Financial Officer at Cover-More was responsibility for Information Technology, Legal, Risk and Compliance and Operations. Mark has previously served as the Chief Financial Officer of CFSGAM as well as Chief Financial Officer for Colonial First State and Wealth Management Advice in the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Before commencing at CFSGAM in 2008, Mark held several global roles within Vodafone, including stints as Chief Financial Officer of the New Zealand business, Finance Director of the Japanese business and Chief Financial Officer of the Australian business.

Mark is a Senior Fellow of Financial Services Institute of Australia (FINSIA).

Lindall West
Chief Human Resources Officer

Lindall West is the Chief Human Resources Officer for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in Sydney.

In her role, Lindall is responsible for the Human Resources function globally, including development and execution of recruitment, retention, talent management and reward strategies.

Before joining CFSGAM in January 2011, Lindall was Head of Human Resources Asia, Westpac Banking Corporation based in Singapore. In this capacity she had responsibility for all elements of human resources across Singapore, Hong Kong, China, India and Indonesia.

Lindall also held a senior Organisational Development role for Westpac Institutional Bank where she was responsible for leading work on Diversity, Talent, Leadership Development and Talent Acquisition.

Before this she held the role of Head of Human Resources for BT Investment Management where she led the people integration of three funds management businesses. In 2000, Lindall took on the role of Head of Human Resources and Training for Rothschild Australia Asset Management.

Lindall was formerly Vice-Chairperson of Financial Institutions Remuneration Group, a Committee Member of Women in Finance and Vice President, YWCA NSW.

Regional leadership

Heather Brilliant, CFA
Managing Director, Americas

Heather Brilliant is the Managing Director, Americas at Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in New York. Heather is responsible for managing the business in the Americas and further expanding market presence across the region.

Heather has worked in the industry for over 20 years. Before joining CFSGAM in 2017, she spent 14 years at Morningstar most recently as Chief Executive Officer of Morningstar Australasia. In this role, Heather devised and drove various initiatives based on functional and local market priorities, including the development and implementation of a 10-year strategy to accelerate business growth. Preceding this, she led the equity and corporate credit research teams at Morningstar.

Heather also spent several years as an equity research analyst for Coghill Capital Management and Driehaus Capital Management. She has covered a variety of sectors, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, business services, and retail. She started her finance career at Bank of America as a corporate finance analyst covering the auto industry.

Heather is the vice chair of the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) Institute Board of Governors, past chair of the CFA Society of Chicago and member of the International Women’s Forum (IWF).

Harry Moore
Managing Director, Australia

Harry Moore is Managing Director, Australia for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in Melbourne.

Harry has responsibility for business development and client service for Australia, New Zealand and Japan. In Australia and New Zealand, he works on a national basis with large industry government and corporate superannuation funds as well as insurers, universities and charities. He is responsible for sales and client servicing whilst ensuring that CFSGAM’s investment capabilities and profile remain visible in the institutional market.

Before joining CFSGAM in June 2010, Harry worked at Russell Investments for five years as a consultant in the Institutions and Governments team providing tailored strategic investment advice and implementation to domestic and pan-Asian clients. Harry has also worked as a client advisor and analyst at UBS Wealth Management Australia and Johnson Taylor Potter.

Michael Stapleton
Managing Partner, First State Stewart Asia Acting Managing Director, Asia

Michael Stapleton is a Managing Partner, First State Stewart Asia and Acting Managing Director, Asia for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in Hong Kong.

First State Stewart Asia is part of First State Investments which is the business name of the CFSGAM Group ex-Australia. Michael has more than 21 years of experience in the investments industry. He joined the First State Stewart Asia team in July 2015 after being part of First State Investments’ global business for more than 19 years. Based in Hong Kong, Michael is responsible for the business management of the First State Stewart Asia team.

After joining Colonial First State Global Asset Management in 1998, Michael worked in the institutional business in Australia before moving to the UK to become Head of Institutional Business Development. He subsequently moved to Hong Kong in June 2009 and has been based in Asia since then. Michael is also Managing Director, Asia Pacific, overseeing business development and the day-to-day functional operations in the region.

Before joining CFSGAM in October 1998, Michael commenced his career at JP Morgan Investments in Australia as a member of the Institutional Business Team.

Chris Turpin
Managing Director, EMEA Global Head of Product, Marketing and Responsible Investment

Chris Turpin is the Managing Director for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) in EMEA and is based in London.

In his role, Chris is responsible for all aspects of our business in the United Kingdom, Europe and Middle East from local functional oversight to business development and client management.

Chris also leads CFSGAM’s Product Management and Development, Marketing and Responsible Investment strategies and teams globally—across Asia, Australia, EMEA and North America.

Before joining CFSGAM in 2003 Chris worked as a Director of Product at Northern Trust Asset Management. Before this he trained and worked in the Investment Management Group at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in London.

Chris sits on the Advisory Council for the UK Investment Association and the International Trade & Industry Committee at TheCityUK

Investment Leadership

Perry Clausen
Global Head of Unlisted Infrastructure

Perry is the Global Head of Unlisted Infrastructure for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) based in Melbourne.

In his role, Perry is responsible for oversight and development of the unlisted infrastructure investments business globally.

Before joining CFSGAM in March 2007, Perry was Director of Infrastructure Investments for Super Investment Management Pty Limited; a wholly owned funds management company of the Retail Employees Superannuation Trust (REST). Perry was responsible for establishing a direct infrastructure portfolio and for managing REST’s investment in a number of entities. Perry has more than 25 years’ of infrastructure and financial experience including nine years at the National Australia Bank where he was a director in the Project and Structured Finance Group. For six years Perry was a director and Investment Committee Member of National Australia Bank Superannuation Pty Ltd, the trustee of the A$2 billion National Australia Bank Group Superannuation Fund.

Perry was previously a Director of National Australia Bank Superannuation Pty Ltd (the trustee of the National Australia Bank Group Superannuation Fund, 1995–2000), Brisbane Airport Corporation (2008 to 2014, 2015–16), and is to today a Director of several CFSGAM entities.

Perry is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (MAICD) and Chartered Professional Accountants Canada (CPA Canada).

David Dixon
Chief Investment Officer, Equities

David Dixon is the Chief Investment Officer, Equities for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in Sydney.

In his role, David is responsible for managing the Equities investment management teams. The total investment management team comprises of over 90 staff located throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and North America.

Before joining CFSGAM in May 2003 David was the Chief Investment Officer of IAG Asset Management where he had overall responsibility for approximately A$10 billion of assets under management. Before that David served as IAG’s Head of Equities for nearly six years. And before IAG he spent 18 years with Westpac Banking Corporation, of which the final ten years was with Westpac Investment Management in a variety of roles including Equity Analyst, Portfolio Manager and Head of Corporate Research.

David has been a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors since 2004 and has also been a member of the Financial Services Council’s Investment Board since 2003.

Paul Griffiths
Chief Investment Officer, Fixed Income and Multi-Asset Solutions

Paul Griffiths is the Chief Investment Officer, Fixed Income and Multi-Asset Solutions for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in London.

Paul joined CFSGAM in July 2013 and is responsible for the oversight and global development of the Fixed Income and Multi-Asset Solutions businesses.

Before joining CFSGAM, Paul had 24 years’ investment and management experience with firms including Aberdeen, Credit Suisse, AXA and Investec. During his career Paul has been a highly rated portfolio manager, winning the Fixed Income Fund Manager of the Year award on several occasions. He holds advisory board positions with the Global Fixed Income Institute, the Investment Management Review and the University of York.

A passionate believer in developing investment talent, Paul is the founder investor of the United Kingdom’s first student-run investment portfolio based at the University of York.

Jon Asante
Managing Partner, Stewart Investors

Jonathan is a joint Managing Partner, Stewart Investors for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in Edinburgh. He is a portfolio manager focussed on investing in companies in both the developing and developed worlds.

Before commencing his career in the City of London, he studied economics at London School of Economics for five years and taught for a year on a research scholarship. He joined Stewart Investors in Edinburgh in November 2004, after nearly 10 years working in the City of London.

David Gait
Managing Partner, Stewart Investors

David is a joint Managing Partner, Stewart Investors for Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and is based in Sydney. He is a portfolio manager and his day job involves meeting the senior management teams of listed Asian, emerging markets and global companies, assessing their long-term sustainability positioning and deciding whether they are of sufficient quality to be entrusted with clients’ capital.

David is still in his first job, having joined over twenty years ago in the midst of the Asian Financial crisis.

Martin Lau
Managing Partner, First State Stewart Asia

Martin Lau is a Managing Partner of First State Stewart Asia, part of Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) and he is based in Hong Kong. Martin has more than 20 years of investment experience and has been with the team for almost 16 years, starting with the firm as Director, Greater China Equities in 2002. Martin is the lead portfolio manager for a number of funds covering Greater China and the Asia Pacific region. He is also responsible for supervising and directly managing First State Stewart Asia’s team of research analysts and portfolio managers.

Before joining First State Stewart Asia, Martin was a fund manager at Invesco Asia, where he was the country specialist for Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.
